What you get
| HD (maxresdefault) | 1280 × 720, 16:9 |
|---|---|
| SD (sddefault) | 640 × 480, 4:3 |
| HQ (hqdefault) | 480 × 360, 4:3 |
| MQ (mqdefault) | 320 × 180, 16:9 |
| File type | JPG |
| Links accepted | youtube.com/watch, youtu.be, /shorts/, /embed/ |
The 640 × 480 and 480 × 360 versions are 4:3, so a 16:9 thumbnail appears with black bars at the top and bottom. Use the HD or MQ version if you want the image without bars.
How it works
Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored at fixed addresses on YouTube's image server. When you paste a link, we read the video ID from it and show you each of those images.
Nothing is converted or re-compressed. The file you download is the same JPG YouTube shows in search results and on the home page.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- 01
Copy the link of a YouTube video or Short (Share → Copy link works).
- 02
Paste it into the box above and press the button.
- 03
Check the HD preview. Smaller sizes are listed underneath.
- 04
Click Download on the size you want, or copy the image link.
If it doesn't work
- The HD image is a small grey picture
- The video has no 1280 × 720 thumbnail. This happens with some older videos and when the creator never uploaded a custom HD image. Use the SD or HQ version instead.
- Nothing happens after pasting
- Check that the link contains a video ID, like youtube.com/watch?v=… or youtu.be/…. Channel, playlist and search links don't point to a single video.
- A Shorts thumbnail looks cropped or has bars
- YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails in the same landscape sizes as normal videos, so a vertical frame may be cropped or padded.
- The thumbnail is out of date
- YouTube can take a while to replace the stored image after a creator changes it. Try again later.
YouTube thumbnail tips
Check it at phone size
Most views come from small screens. Shrink a downloaded thumbnail to the width of your thumb. If you can still tell what the video is about, it works.
Watch the bottom-right corner
YouTube puts the video length over the bottom-right corner. Keep text and faces out of that spot on your own thumbnails.
Compare, don't copy
Put three or four top thumbnails from your niche side by side and note what they share: a face, a colour, how many words. Then make your own version.
Good reasons to use it
- Use your own old thumbnail when you've lost the original file
- Collect references for a redesign
- Compare thumbnails in your niche side by side
- Add a video image to a blog post or presentation about that video

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest YouTube thumbnail I can download?
1280 × 720 pixels. Creators can upload larger files, but 1280 × 720 is the largest copy YouTube makes public, so a "4K thumbnail download" isn't really possible.
Does it work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link. YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails in landscape sizes, so a vertical frame may look cropped.
Can I use someone else's thumbnail on my channel?
No. Thumbnails belong to the creator. Use downloads for reference, study, or your own videos.
Why are some sizes 4:3 with black bars?
YouTube still generates two older 4:3 sizes (640 × 480 and 480 × 360). The 16:9 image sits inside them with bars above and below.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, and the tool is free.
