What you get
| Image | The cover image Facebook shows when the video is shared |
|---|---|
| File type | JPG |
| Size | Set by Facebook; often smaller than the original upload |
| Works with | Public videos and Reels |
| Links accepted | facebook.com, fb.watch, fb.com |
Facebook decides the size of the preview image. It is usually fine for reference, but it may be smaller than the file the creator uploaded.
How it works
When a public Facebook video is shared, Facebook provides a preview image for it, the same one you see when a video link is posted in a chat. Our server asks Facebook for that preview and gives you the image.
Facebook only provides this for public videos. Friends-only videos, private groups and some age-restricted videos send a login page instead, so they can't be read.

- 03
Check the preview to make sure it is the right video.

If it doesn't work
- "Facebook asked for a login"
- The video isn't public. Ask the owner for the file, or use a video that opens in a private browser window without logging in.
- The image looks small or soft
- Facebook chose a smaller preview for that video. Our Image Upscaler can enlarge it 2× or 4×, but it can't add detail that isn't there.
- A copied image link stopped working
- Facebook image links expire after a while. Download the file instead of saving the link.
- Wrong image or a page logo
- Some posts with several videos or a link preview return the page's main image. Open the specific video first, then copy its own link.
Facebook thumbnail tips
Design for a busy feed
Facebook videos appear between text posts, photos and ads. A clear face and two or three large words are easier to spot than a detailed scene.
Plan for different crops
Facebook shows the same video wide in some places and square or vertical in others. Keep the important part in the middle.
Mind the sound-off viewer
Many people scroll with the sound off. Your cover and first second should explain the video on their own.
Good reasons to use it
- Recover the cover of your own video or Reel
- Collect references from pages in your niche
- Use the cover in a report or presentation about that video
- Check how a cover looks before reusing it on another platform
CTR Insight
"Most people see your video in a busy mobile feed. A clear face and a few large words are easier to notice than a detailed scene."
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it only work with public videos?
Facebook only gives out the preview image for public content. For anything else it shows a login page, and we don't ask for or use your Facebook login.
Is the image in HD?
It is the size Facebook provides for the preview. That is often lower than the original upload, so we don't promise HD.
Does it work with Reels and fb.watch links?
Yes, as long as the Reel or video is public.
Can I reuse someone else's cover?
Covers belong to their creators. Use downloads for reference or for your own content.
Do you store the links I paste?
Our tool doesn't save them. Our hosting provider may keep standard request logs for a short time, as described in our Privacy Policy.
