How this upscaler works
When you stretch a small picture in most apps, it is enlarged in one jump and comes out soft and blocky. This tool enlarges it in steps of 2× using your browser's highest-quality resampling, which keeps edges smoother. It then applies a light unsharp mask, a standard photo-editing technique that boosts contrast along edges so the result looks crisper.
It does not use AI. AI upscalers guess new detail and can produce sharper results on some photos, but they can also invent things that were never there. This tool only works with the detail already in your image, so what you get is a cleaner, larger version of the same picture.
When it helps, and when it won't
Good results
- A 640 × 360 video frame you want to use as a 1280 × 720 thumbnail.
- A small logo, sticker or cut-out that needs to be bigger in your design.
- A downloaded cover image you want to study or print larger.
Limited results
- Photos that are out of focus or have motion blur. They get bigger, not sharper.
- Heavily compressed images. Blocky JPEG artefacts are enlarged too.
- Tiny text. If you can't read it in the original, upscaling won't make it readable.
Tip: for a YouTube thumbnail, upscale your frame to at least 1280 × 720, save as JPG, and check the file is under YouTube's 2 MB limit before uploading.

- Leave sharpening on Normal unless the result looks too soft (try Strong) or too harsh (try Off).

Questions
Does this use AI?
No. It enlarges your image with high-quality resampling and then sharpens the edges. AI upscalers try to guess new detail; this tool only works with the detail already in your picture, so it will not invent faces, text or texture.
Will it fix a blurry photo?
It makes a small or soft image larger and crisper at the edges, but it cannot bring back detail that was never captured. A badly out-of-focus photo will still look out of focus, just bigger.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device. The image is never sent to our server.
What is the largest image it can make?
About 12 megapixels (for example 4000 × 3000). Larger results can crash phone browsers, so if 2× or 4× would go over that, the tool uses the largest scale that fits and tells you.
PNG or JPG?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly but makes big files. JPG files are much smaller and look the same for photos and thumbnails. YouTube accepts both for custom thumbnails, up to 2 MB.
Which sharpening level should I pick?
Normal suits most photos and video frames. Strong helps very soft images but can add halos around edges. Off gives a smooth enlargement with no sharpening.
