For a carousel post you get the first image. For a Reel you get the cover the creator chose, not a random frame.
How it works
Instagram has a standard address for the large preview image of every public post. We read the post code from your link, ask Instagram for that preview, and give you the image it returns.
Private accounts return a login page instead of an image, so they can't be read. Instagram also limits how often a server can ask, so a busy moment can cause a temporary failure.
How to download a Instagram thumbnail

In Instagram, tap ⋯ or the paper-plane icon on a post or Reel, then Copy link.

Paste the link into the box above and press Get Image.

If it doesn't work
- "Private account or rate limit"
- Either the account is private, or Instagram is limiting requests. If the account is public, wait a few minutes and try again.
- "Invalid Instagram URL format"
- Use a link to a single post or Reel (it contains /p/ or /reel/). Profile links and Story links don't work.
- You got the wrong image from a carousel
- Only the first image of a carousel is available this way.
- A copied image link stopped working
- Instagram image links expire. Download the file instead of saving the link.
Instagram thumbnail tips
Your grid crops to 3:4
Since January 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles. Keep the title of a Reel cover in the middle of the image.
Leave the bottom alone
When a Reel plays, the caption and username cover the bottom of the screen. Keep text on the cover above that area.
